Tilmann is doctoral candidate at the Collaborative Research Center 700 ‘Governance in Areas of Limited Statehood’ at Freie Universität Berlin. His research interests focus on different styles and logics of governance in international border management initiatives and their effects on mobility. For his thesis, he is currently looking into various internationally-sponsored border management programmes in Côte d’Ivoire and West Africa, focusing on the roles of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), INTERPOL and private security companies. Prior to starting his PhD, he pursued his university studies in International Security, Political Science and European Studies in Berlin, Paris, Montréal and Maastricht. Tilmann also worked as Carlo Schmid fellow and consultant for IOM in Geneva for more than a year.
